Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th in 1972. As an only girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She hoped she would become a English High School teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she dropped out of high school. When she began her professional career, doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. Then, during Roots' show, she revealed herself as an artist. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour of Rent, the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experiences performing. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
